Why Human Rights Matter

Do you care about other people? We all should. Human rights are the basic rights and freedoms that belong to every person in the world, simply because they are human. They include the right to life, liberty, and security of person; freedom from torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment; freedom of opinion and expression; freedom of assembly and association; and the right to marry without discrimination.

Human rights are a set of principles that protect the basic freedoms and dignity of every person on the planet. They are inherent to our humanity, and they cannot be taken away. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted by the United Nations in 1948, outlines some of the most fundamental human rights, including the right to life, liberty, and security; freedom from torture and inhuman or degrading treatment; and freedom from discrimination. These rights are essential for our well-being, and they provide a foundation for a just and fair society. Without human rights, we would be at the mercy of those in power, with no way to defend ourselves against abuse or oppression. Human rights also matter because they help to ensure that everyone is treated equally.

Everyone deserves these rights, no matter who they are or where they come from. And when we stand up for human rights, we make our world a better place for everyone.
